Lots of walks and cycle rides straight from the door (maps and guides in the house), Whinlatter forest with its nature walks, challenging cycle paths and GoApe is only 2 miles away. The market towns of Cockermouth and Keswick are very short drive away and even closer are the beautiful Crummock water, Loweswater and Buttermere lakes. Wonderful for a circular walk or even a lake swim! Lorton also has a wonderful village shop - a great local shop selling a wide range of local produce, which is about 0.75 of a mile walk from the house and they will provide a personalised pack of food / drink etc if you wish. Let the owner know what you’d like and she’ll order one for you and it’ll be waiting when you arrive. There are several really lovely local country pubs within easy walking distance / short driving distance. Try the Kirkstile Inn 4 miles away for a really cosy country pub atmosphere, roaring fires in winter, great food and a garden with a wonderful view of Melbreak; or the Wheatsheaf Inn in Low Lorton also has a good atmosphere, great food and beer and is even closer - just over a mile away.
